How to Reduce Mosquitoes in Your Yard
Mosquitoes thrive in Maryland’s warm, humid months — and while professional treatments drastically reduce populations, a few simple steps at home can make a big difference. At MD Elite Mosquito Services, we believe prevention and maintenance go hand in hand. Here are some proven ways to help keep mosquitoes from taking over your yard.
1. Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes lay eggs in still water — it only takes a few days for larvae to hatch.
Empty flowerpot trays, buckets, birdbaths, and kiddie pools every few days.
Keep gutters clear so water can flow freely.
Check for puddles that form after rain around decks, driveways, or low spots.
2. Maintain Your Yard
A tidy lawn and trimmed shrubs reduce mosquito resting areas.
Mow regularly and remove tall weeds or brush.
Trim back overgrown vegetation around fences and sheds.
Keep woodpiles and lawn debris dry and elevated.
3. Refresh Water Features
If you have a birdbath, fountain, or pond:
Run pumps or fountains to keep water moving.
Use mosquito “dunks” (EPA-approved larvicides) in still features if needed.
4. Check Outdoor Gear
Buckets, toys, tarps, and covers can trap small amounts of water.
Store them upside down or indoors when not in use.
Straighten sagging covers on grills, furniture, or fire pits.
5. Encourage Airflow and Light
Mosquitoes love shade and still air.
Use fans on patios or decks.
Keep sunlight reaching grassy areas by trimming low branches.
6. Schedule Regular Treatments
Even with prevention, professional mosquito control offers the strongest, most reliable results.
